Summer Hair Care Essentials: Top Tips to Prevent Hair Fall, Frizz, Thinning, and Heat Damage

Looking for expert advice to protect your hair from summer problems like hair fall, thinning, and frizz? Don’t worry—we’ve got insights from hair care specialists to help you manage your summer hair woes.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sandeep Arora, a Dermatologist at Apollo Spectra Delhi, suggested, “To prevent hair fall during the summer, protect your scalp from UV rays by wearing a hat, scarf, or using an umbrella. Avoid frequent styling with blow dryers, hot irons, harsh coloring, or other treatments, as these can lead to breakage and thinning. When washing your hair, use warm or cold water, but avoid alternating between very hot and cold water to prevent hygral fatigue and increased hair breakage.”

He further recommended, “Brush your hair only when it is completely dry. If you need to blow dry, use a heat protectant. Staying hydrated by drinking enough fluids can promote healthy hair growth—aim for at least 3 liters of water per day. Incorporate foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E into your diet to strengthen your hair. Use deep conditioning hair masks to combat frizz, and only use hair care products like shampoos, conditioners, and serums after consulting with a dermatologist to ensure they are suitable for your hair type.”

Dr. Shareefa Chause, a Dermatologist and Cosmetologist at Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic, explained, “Several factors contribute to increased hair fall during the summer months. Exposure to harsh UV rays can weaken the hair shaft and lead to breakage. High temperatures and humidity cause excess sweating, leading to scalp issues like dandruff and clogged pores, which can result in hair fall. The hot sun can also damage hair.”

She advised, “Protect your hair by wearing a hat or scarf and avoid unnecessary sun exposure to prevent hair loss. Drink plenty of water to keep your hair healthy and consume foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E for hair growth. Use natural hair oils and apply conditioner to damp hair. A deep-conditioning hair mask will help with hydration and moisturization. When swimming, wear a cap to protect your hair from chlorine, which can make hair brittle. Wash your hair three times a week.”

By following these expert tips, you can keep your hair healthy and strong throughout the summer.
