Upcoming Annular Solar Eclipse on October 2, 2024: Visibility, Sutak Kaal, and Duration Details

The final solar eclipse of 2024 is set to occur on October 2 and is referred to as the Kankan Solar Eclipse. Astrologically, solar eclipses are often viewed as inauspicious, carrying both religious and scientific significance. During a solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring a portion of the Sun’s light. This event can create stunning visual phenomena, such as the “Ring of Fire,” which will also be visible during this eclipse.

Solar eclipses can be categorized into three main types: total, partial, and annular. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun, plunging the Earth into darkness. A partial solar eclipse happens when the Moon obscures only a portion of the Sun, casting a partial shadow. An annular solar eclipse, on the other hand, takes place when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth from a considerable distance, creating a ring-like appearance of the Sun.

For those in India, the eclipse will take place between 9:13 PM IST on October 2 and 3:17 AM IST on October 3. Unfortunately, this timing means that the eclipse will not be visible in India as it will occur at night. However, it will be observable in countries such as Argentina, Peru, and other regions in South America. Consequently, the traditional concept of Sutak Kaal—considered an inauspicious period where certain activities are discouraged—will not be applicable in India this time.

Sutak Kaal is generally a period during which no auspicious tasks are performed, and temples often remain closed. Pregnant women, in particular, are advised to observe specific precautions during a solar eclipse. For instance, it is recommended that they avoid leaving their homes during the eclipse. If it is absolutely necessary to go out, they should apply ochre paste to their stomachs as a protective measure. Additionally, pregnant women should refrain from using sharp objects, such as knives and scissors, to avoid potential negative effects on their unborn child. Lastly, it is believed that sleeping during the eclipse could adversely impact both the health of the mother and the baby, making it wise for expectant mothers to remain awake during this time.
