University of Hyderabad launches online course in Sanskrit with software built using Panini grammar

The University of Hyderabad has launched an online interdisciplinary Sanskrit program with the help of computer software called Saṃsādhanī, which was built using 15 years of research. The platform facilitates access to ancient Sanskrit texts and hosts a variety of computer tools to help students analyze texts in that language.

The software platform and program are the result of a collaboration between the University’s Faculty of Languages in Sanskrit and Gerard Huet, a professor and computer linguist at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Technology. During the software design process, the rigor of Panini’s grammatical sutra calculations helped Hute design his segmenter efficiently, Hute said in a statement.

The course has already received 250 registrations from candidates from around the world “from Fiji to California” with a variety of backgrounds in the arts, humanities, engineering and medicine. Candidates also belong to a diverse age group from 20 to 80 years.

The four instructors who teach this course include Amba Kulkarni, Huet, Arjuna SR of Manipal University, and Pavankumar Satuluri of Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth in Kochi, who are professors at Sanskrit University in UoH. Arjuna is an assistant professor of philosophy at Manipal University and Satuluri is an assistant professor of linguistics and literature at Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth.

“On the one hand, we are looking at ways to leverage computer technology to overcome language barriers and reduce the time it takes to learn new languages. On the other hand, we are also looking at IGTs to build these computational tools. I am doing it. ” Kulkarni, who is also the coordinator of the new course, said in a statement. Kulkarni has been working on Panini’s grammar from a computational and natural language processing perspective.

According to Basuthkar Jagadeeshwar Rao, Vice President of the University, this course will be a trendsetter in understanding the construction of ideas using languages with the help of linguistic analysis, rigorous calculations and scientific methods. .. The start of the course was the rediscovery of Panini with the latest computational tools, Rao added.
