India protects more than 20% of the visually impaired on earth, most of whom live in villages. Untreated cataracts and refractive errors are the number one cause of visual impairment in the country. As “Love Your Eyes” is the theme of this year’s World Sight Day celebration, we share five important eye care tips:
Take a break from the screen
The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many to work from home and spend hours in front of their computer screens. Many people spent their leisure time sticking to their cell phones. Such activities cause eyestrain, dry eye, red eyes, eye spasms, headaches, blurred vision, and myopia. According to the rules of 20-20-20, people should look away from the screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes and look about 20 feet away.
Ultraviolet rays from the sun have the shortest wavelength, are energetic, and can impair vision. The monitor screens of mobile phones and computers emit blue light, which is the closest to the ultraviolet rays in the energy spectrum, and can be tiring to the eyes. Special blue light filtering reading glasses, sunglasses, or computer screen protectors can help minimize damage to your eyesight.
Healthy food for healthy eyes
Antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E, certain carotenoids, zinc and copper reduce eye degeneration. Oranges, strawberries, carrots, peas, cabbage, cauliflower, pumpkins, papayas, spinach, tomatoes, cashew nuts, peanuts and almonds are good sources of such nutrients. Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish such as salmon, tuna, walnuts and flax also help reduce eye damage.
After tired those eye muscles all day, the eyes need to rest. Sleep helps to relax and restore tense eye muscles and nerves, and restore lubrication through tears.
Roll the eyeballs, rub the palms together to heat, place on the eyes, lightly massage the eyes with the thumbs, energize the eye muscles and reduce fatigue. Warm up exercises and walking exercises promote blood circulation, which helps our eyes.
We need to test our eyes from time to time. This helps identify and treat eye diseases that patients may have.
