More than 30 years after the program was created, Sotheby’s in New York has planned a week-long sale of the program that paves the way for the Internet as we know it.
The lot contained an animated version of Berners-Lee’s approximately 10,000 lines of code and a letter from a British-born computer scientist himself.
Cassandra Hatton, vice president of Sotheby’s, mentioned the recent NFT boom and said, “Ten years ago, we wouldn’t have been able to do this.”
Hatton said the work is unique because it is important for the creation of the World Wide Web.
“It changed every aspect of your life,” Hatton said. “We do not fully understand the impact it has on our lives and the impact we continue to have on our lives.”
In 1989, Berners-Lee, who turned from a physicist to a computer scientist, envisioned an information sharing system that would allow scientists to access data from anywhere in the world.
At that time, he was an employee of the CERN data center in Geneva (originally the European Organization for Nuclear Research, now the European Organization for Nuclear Research). He named the new network the World Wide Web (WWW).
In 1990 and 1991, he wrote the program to create the first Internet browser, laying the working foundation for the current Web.
In the process, he also invented URLs (Internet addresses), HTTP (where users can find sites), and HTML (a standard coding language for creating websites).
Berners-Lee decided to make the Web an open space and did not patent his program, but made it freely available to everyone and contributed to its widespread use.
More than 30 years after its invention, Berners-Lee put the original program file on sale as a collector’s item. At the end of the auction, he receives a portion of the proceeds from the sale, but he intends to donate all of the proceeds to the charity.
NFTs are digital objects such as drawings, animations, music, photographs and videos with certificates of authenticity created by the blockchain technology underlying cryptocurrencies. It cannot be forged or otherwise manipulated.
NFTs are currently generating hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions each month.
NFT exchanges are done in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, a specialized site, and traditional auction companies are trying to take advantage of this phenomenon.
