Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has been listed on Time Magazine’s Global List of 100 Most Influential People in 2021.
Mura Baradar, head of the Taliban political office in Doha, is said to have negotiated a Doha peace agreement between the Taliban and the United States. He was a founding member of the Taliban and a close companion to the founder of the movement, Muraomar.
Baradar was appointed earlier this month on behalf of Mura Ahund, the head of the Taliban’s new interim government.

Pakistani journalist Ahmed Rashid’s profile of Murabaradar in Time magazine describes him as the “fulcrum for the future” in Afghanistan.
Ahmed Rashid goes on to write: “A quiet and secretive man who rarely makes public statements or interviews, yet Baradal represents a gentler flow within the Taliban.”
“The question is whether a man who has deceived an American from Afghanistan can shake his own movements.”
Baradar calms rumors of death
To the surprise of most, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar recently appeared on Afghan national television to quell rumors about his death.
Several unconfirmed reports over the past few days have hinted at a gun battle between rival Taliban factions at the Presidential Palace in Kabul. Baradar was alleged to have been seriously injured in this shootout.
Taliban leaders can be heard accusing the “fake propaganda” behind his death rumors and telling Afghan state television: At this point, all our brothers and friends, we are all fine. “
