Online sales of 55 lots from her daughter Frieda Hughes’ personal collection began on July 9th in Sotheby’s, London, more than triple the estimate.
An outstanding item was the tarot card deck, which reflected the couple’s interest in esotericism. It sold for £ 151,200, more than 25 times the estimated price.
Tarot cards are often used for fortune-telling and are related to the occult.
The Tarot de Marseille card could be the deck Hughes gave to his 24th birthday in 1956.
“We celebrated my birthday yesterday: [Ted] He gave me a nice tarot card pack and a dear rhyme with it, “plus wrote to his mother, Aurelia.
The card was estimated to sell for up to £ 6,000.

Plus clearly hinted at the tarot in her poems, including The Hanged Man.
The couple’s gold wedding ring sold for £ 27,720, and four plus-typed love letters to Hughes sold for £ 30,240 each.
The sale included a total of 16 letters since the marriage of the couple in 1956, when Plus was still studying in Cambridge and Hughes was working in London. According to Sotheby’s, they are the only such letters that survived.
For one thing, Plus states that she lost him by “mysteriously blending in” with her new husband.
Plus was looking forward to their reunion “shining cup” after finishing the final exam in June 1957.
“I will never leave your side in my life after the exam … I think I will really kill myself if something happens to you,” she wrote. ..
The letter contains a draft of her poem and a critique of Hughes’ work on the groundbreaking collection “The Hawk in the Rain.”
“My husband is a genius,” she wrote.
The sale also included 192 photos of the couple and their children (Frida and his brother Nicholas), as well as a family album with handwritten captions by Plus. It sold for £ 44,100.
“This auction is about the happiest and most dynamic part of a parent’s relationship when they are working together at their best and loving and supporting each other very passionately. “The poet and painter Frieda Hughes, 61, said prior to the sale.
“When I read my mother’s letter to my father, their passion and their love are extraordinary. I don’t know if anyone will find such love in their lifetime.”
Becoming British poet laureates, Plus and Hughes continue to be two of the most famous post-war poets in English literature.
Hughes remained silent about the death of his first wife until the publication of the acclaimed poetry book “Birthday Letter” in 1998.
He died of cancer at the age of 68, just a few months later.
In 2010, Hughes published a poem he had never seen before. This poem describes the darkness, one of Britain’s coldest winters, before the plus suicide in February 1963.
Suffering from depression, Plus carefully sealed the kitchen door to protect Frida and Nicholas, who were sleeping in a nearby room, and then inhaled smoke from the gas oven.
She has recorded her fight against depression since she was a teenager in her autobiographical novel, Belger.
Nicholas Hughes committed suicide in March 2009. According to his sister, he was suffering from depression.
