Vienna: Indian golfer SSP Chawrasia continued his pursuit of European Tour titles outside India, scoring a stunning 4-under 68 in the second round and taking fifth place share at the Austrian Open.
The 42-year-old’s four European Tour victories took place in India, two of which were the 2016 and 2017 Hero Indian Open. With the exception of four co-authorized tours in Asia, Chaurasia has won more in Asia. ..
Of his six international championships, only one has left India. The Resorts World Manila Masters Open was held in the Philippines in 2016. He hasn’t won since 2017.
With a total of 4 under 140 here, he is in 5th place, 3 shots behind leader Alejandro Cañizares (67-70).
Overall, it was a good day for the Indians who seemed to be on the edge after the first day.
Schwankar Sharma bounced from 75 in the first round to card 4 under 68. This seemed much better at some stage. He dropped from 5 under to 11 and dropped a bogey on the 15th to settle on the T-20 finish at the end of the day.
Chandigarh’s Ajeetesh Sandhu also had his first event outside India since March last year and performed well after 77 in the first round. Sandhu added 70 to the first round 77 and cut the bubble with 3 overs.
The 7-under Canizares were both one more than the 6-under John Catlin (70) and Martin Kaymer (70).
Justin Walters (68) was fourth with a five-under, Chaurasia, Max Keefer (68), Jack Kruiswijk (72) and Richard Mansell (71) were T-5.
Chaurasia, who missed the last six cuts on the European Tour, laughed, “No, I didn’t think I missed the cut when I started the second round. I was thinking about dealing with the cold weather. On the first day It was very cold at 3 degrees when I started.
“Today it was about 6 degrees and I was joking that I was wearing all the clothes I brought.”
Chawrasia seemed quite happy with how things panted out in the second round for him.
“The 9th bogey was my only mistake and I had birdies on the 13th and 15th. It was good to get 3 out of 4 par 5s. That’s the key to the weekend. Let’s do it, “he said.
“This course looks a bit at the Delhi Golf Club, especially holes like 14th and 15th.”
