Sri Lanka records the highest COVID-19 deaths in a day

Colombo: The number of deaths from the coronavirus in Sri Lanka has exceeded 2,000, with 101 deaths on Thursday since the outbreak of the pandemic and the highest number of deaths in a day.
Coronavirus deaths reached 2,011 in Sri Lanka, which is facing a third wave of pandemics, health officials said Friday.
The 101 deaths reported on Thursday were the highest number of deaths confirmed in a day since the pandemic broke out in March 2020.
An eight-day-old baby from the town of Puserawa in the Kandy district, who died Wednesday, was the country’s youngest Covid victim, health officials said. Most of the patients who died from Covid-19 were 65-75 years old.
In Sri Lanka, positive cases and deaths have increased since April, partly due to celebrations and shopping at the traditional New Year festival last month.
The country has registered more than 2,17,000 positive cases so far.
The current surge has been forced to block in the form of travel restrictions since early May. The restrictions will be lifted on June 14th.
Travel restrictions were imposed after health professionals demanded a complete blockade in light of the fierce third wave of the pandemic after April 15.
