South Africa Accelerates Vaccination Campaign Amid Rapid Increase

South Africa is vaccinated one week after the discovery of the omicron variant of coronavirus by giving jabs to pop-up sites in shopping centers and transportation hubs to counter the surge in new COVID-19 cases. Accelerated the campaign.

According to official statistics, the number of new daily cases almost doubled from 4,373 the day before to 8,561 on Wednesday. Scientists said they were preparing for a continuing surge.

Health Minister Joe Fara said Thursday that he hopes his family will be safe during this festive season. Try to protect yourself and your loved ones before you go home or go on vacation. Visit your parents and take them to your nearest vaccination site if you have not been vaccinated yet. It can save their lives.

Located in South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria, Gauteng is a hotspot for new infections, accounting for more than 70% of new cases.

Houten officials said they were prepared for the worst by increasing beds and reopening several field hospitals in anticipation of increased hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients.

Tests have shown that the first reported Omicron subspecies in South Africa has spread rapidly and is now present in five of South Africa’s nine states. It is unclear how many new daily cases are associated with Omicron, as scientists can only perform complete gene sequencing with a small number of positive tests.

However, according to a statement released by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Omicron seems to be rapidly becoming the predominant mutant in South Africa. The laboratory said that 74% of the 249 samples sequenced in November were identified as omicrons.

In October, before Omicron was discovered, the delta mutant was the predominant form of coronavirus in South Africa.

Scientists in South Africa and around the world are sequencing Omicron samples to learn more about mutants. As some health officials suspect, including whether it is more contagious, whether it makes people more seriously ill, or whether existing vaccines are effective against it. Much remains unknown about Omicron.

Gauteng Prime Minister David Muffler said Thursday that he was encouraged to see more people vaccinated and the state has recorded at least 50,000 vaccinations this week.

However, about half of the state’s 16 million people remain unvaccinated, Muffler said. He said this number included many migrants who could not be vaccinated because they were in South Africa without permission and could not be recorded in the digital vaccination system.

According to official statistics, about 36% of South African adults are fully vaccinated. Currently, the country has been vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson vaccines 19 million times, but the pace of vaccination is slowing.

As a result, authorities have launched a new campaign to increase the number of vaccines given before many South Africans start traveling or socializing during the holiday season.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, South Africa, with a population of 60 million, has confirmed a total of 2.9 million cases and nearly 90,000 deaths.
