Shanghai cuts tourism, cities in eastern China limit transportation of revived Covid

With a small number of local COVID-19 cases in eastern China, Shanghai has restricted tourism activities and neighboring cities have reduced public transport services. The city of Shanghai detected three domestically infected COVID-19 cases with confirmed symptoms on November 25, official data from the National Health Commission (NHC) showed on Friday. The last localized symptomatic infection in Shanghai was reported in August.

The new infection occurred days after China contained the largest outbreak caused by the delta mutant. This suggests an increasing challenge in efforts to eliminate local clusters.

National health officials said earlier this month that China’s purpose is not to keep infections zero, but to ensure that local clusters are detected and contained as quickly as possible.

Shanghai has stopped travel agencies from organizing tourism, including travel between cities and other state-level areas.

A financial hub of 24.9 million residents has blocked some residential compounds that appear to be at high risk of infection, and two local hospitals have shut down some face-to-face services to comply with COVID controls. ..

Xuzhou, eastern Jiangsu Province, reported a locally infected asymptomatic carrier on November 25, about 9 hours drive from Shanghai and in close contact with the infectious disease in Shanghai. China counts asymptomatic cases separately.

A city with a population of 9.1 million has shut down all three subway lines, disconnected parts of the city’s entire and long-distance bus services, and closed several entrances to the highway connecting the city to the surrounding area.

Residents must be advised not to leave the town for unnecessary reasons, and those who have to travel must show evidence of a negative test result within 48 hours of departure.

Xuzhou has demanded the suspension of large-scale face-to-face public activities such as concerts, sporting events and exhibitions. It also demanded that all schools suspend offline classes between Friday and Sunday, and urged universities to gain greater control over requests for students to leave campus.

Two localized asymptomatic infections were also detected on November 25 in Hangzhou, eastern Zhejiang, according to NHC data.

As of November 25, 98,583 confirmed and symptomatic cases have been reported in mainland China, including both local and international cases. The total number of deaths remained unchanged at 4,636.
