Russia has recorded 37,930 cases of coronavirus, the highest since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Russia reported another daily record of coronavirus cases confirmed on Monday. The Kremlin has told most people to quit their jobs later this week due to the proliferation of infections.

The Russian Government’s Coronavirus Response Headquarters has aggregated 37,930 newly identified cases in 24 hours. This is the highest number since the start of the pandemic. The Task Force also reported 1,069 Covid-19 deaths during the same period. This is slightly less than the record of 1,075 people reached on the weekend.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the country not to work for Russians from October 30th to November 7th, when the country is on long vacation. In some of Russia’s 85 regions, where the situation is particularly severe, Putin said the outage period would start earlier and could be extended beyond November 7.

In the meantime, most state organizations and private companies, with the exception of those operating major infrastructure and a few others, are to be suspended.

Moscow officials are planning to order a holiday to start on Thursday. Gymnasiums, most entertainment venues and most stores will be closed for 11 days along with kindergartens and schools. Restaurants and cafes are only open for takeaway or delivery orders during that period. Grocery stores and pharmacies can be left open.

Access to museums, theaters, concert halls and other venues is limited to those who hold a digital code on their smartphone to certify vaccinations or past illnesses. This will continue after November 7th.

Russian officials hope that idle time will help limit the spread of the virus by keeping people away from offices and public transport where mask obligations are loosely enforced.

Overall, Russia has recorded more than 8.2 million confirmed viral cases and 231,669 deaths, the highest in Europe and the fifth in the world after the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico. The number of deaths is high.

The government has blamed the recent surge in infections and deaths for low vaccination rates and loose public attitudes towards taking precautionary measures. Only about 45 million Russians (about one-third of the country’s about 146 million) are fully vaccinated.

Russia is the first country in the world to license the coronavirus vaccine and launched Sputnik V in August 2020, with abundant supply. However, due to the conflicting signals from the authorities, the uptake is slowing down.
