Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) have invented better water management policies and ways to solve the problem of water scarcity in India through a process called “virtual water flow”.

Virtual water (VW) is water involved in the production and trade of food and non-food goods and services. It is that “invisible” water that has been consumed throughout the life cycle of a product or service.

For the study, the study used ecological economics to study the socio-political factors that govern the “virtual water flow”. The concept of VW was first conceived in the 1990s to understand how water-stressed countries provide people with essentials such as food, clothing, shelter and other water-intensive products. .. For example, countries with limited water resources want to import water-consuming cotton rather than cultivating it with water.

The study was carried out by Dr. Anami Kabalua, a professor of the IIT Guwahati Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, along with scientists from the University of Zaragoza, Spain. The research results are published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Water Resources Research, and Journal of Water.

Dr. Barua described the study and said, “The evaluation of virtual water streams is aimed at inducing sustainable use that may lead to water safety.”

The study first addresses the scientific policy gap on water scarcity by first analyzing the water streams hidden in agricultural products moving between different states of India. Next, we will link to the situation of water scarcity in the region and some existing elements of water policy to understand the knowledge and governance gaps for mitigating water scarcity in the country.

The team found that some VW flows between states were unsustainable, as water through produce flows from a very water-scarce state in the north to other water-scarce states in the west and south. did. Such unsustainable streams are being driven by a larger population and arable land. In contrast, sustainable flows, that is, flows from water scarcity zones to water scarcity zones, help combat water scarcity.

Studies show that in states with chronic water scarcity, sustainable agricultural planning and implementation is critical to achieving water and food security. We also found that by using VW flow analysis to diversify production areas and produce edible grains suitable for agricultural climates, pressure on freshwater resources in dry water can be reduced.
