Qualcomm Chip aims to create a new category of handheld gaming devices

Qualcomm Inc released a new chip on Wednesday designed for gaming-only handheld devices that offer 5G connectivity. This is a potential new mobile platform for video gamers that offers the flexibility to play streaming games on the go.

The San Diego-based company said it has partnered with gaming hardware company Razer Inc to create an initial test device for game makers.

Qualcomm is the world’s largest supplier of chips for smartphones and has become the leading platform for video games. Video games are one of the largest sources of revenue in mobile app stores.

Qualcomm will use the G3 x Gen 1 chip, announced Wednesday, to play not only handheld devices with smartphone-like touch screens, but also physical controls such as game console controllers and graphics-intensive games. It assumes a much longer battery life.

The most popular similar device on the market today is the Nintendo Co Ltd Switch, which does not have a cellular data connection and instead relies on a WiFi connection.

Devices powered by Qualcomm have a 5G connection for streaming games directly from cloud gaming providers such as Microsoft Corp when WiFi is not available. The device also has a larger battery to take advantage of Qualcomm’s graphics processing capabilities. This shortens battery life and is often not fully utilized on the phone.

“The key to the phone is that it always fits in your pocket. Qualcomm’s senior director of product management, Micah Knapp, told Reuters in an interview: Game?”

Qualcomm said it has partnered with gaming PC and laptop maker Razer to create an early “developer kit” that game makers can use to get started writing software.
