San Luis Obispo, CA: This week, a California prison guard was arrested on suspicion of calling him a racial slur after beating a Wells Fargo branch manager and being asked to wear a mask in a bank. I did.
James Allen Jones, Jr., 50, was arrested on Tuesday for work at the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo after a 10-day investigation into the attack on September 3. Police said white Jones made racist comments on Hispanic victims.
It’s unclear if Jones has a lawyer who can speak for him. Calls to the phone numbers listed for him could not be answered.
A customer was upset when a bank manager asked San Luis Obispo Tribune to ask a man to wear a mask as required by a local health order, calling him a racist slur and in the lobby. He said he made a fuss. Later that night, the manager said the man appeared in a parking lot in the central California city of Grover Beach and fought him. The man ran away before the police arrived.
This is one of several cases of violence or threats reported nationally by workers seeking to enforce COVID-19 restrictions in businesses, schools and elsewhere.
Grover Beach police chief John Peters said investigators identified Jones as a suspect after interviewing witnesses and collecting surveillance videos and his still photos. They obtained a warrant to search his home and property, committed a hate crime, and arrested him at work on charges of criminal intimidation and serious injury.
Hate speech, violent behavior, racism, stigma, and all forms of stigma are unacceptable and do not exist in our society, Peters said in a news release. “The City of Grover Beach is committed to fostering a collaborative, safe and culturally diverse environment for residents, workers, business owners and tourists.
Mr Peters said police would file their proceedings and ask prosecutors in San Luis Obispo County to prosecute next week. Jones was released from detention after giving $ 50,000 on bail.
Jones, a 27-year-old employee, has been on leave until the outcome of his proceedings, and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is cooperating with the investigation, spokeswoman Vicky Waters said. She did not identify whether he was on paid or unpaid leave.
According to Waters, the details of the case are sad and the CDCR does not tolerate this type of on-duty or off-duty activity. This does not represent a standard or expectation for our department or our staff.
