Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has signed a new head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) espionage agency, the military said Tuesday.

Lieutenant Nadim Anjum was approved as ISI Secretary after final talks between Pakistani Army Chief of Staff Kamal Javid Bajuwa and Khan.

The announcement followed weeks of speculation that delays meant a rift between civilians and military power-speculations denied by authorities.

The head of the ISI is one of Pakistan’s most important positions at the intersection of domestic politics, radical warfare and Pakistan’s foreign relations.

This appointment is made because Afghanistan faces the risk of economic collapse and the possibility of a resurgence of armed groups by groups such as Islamic State after the Taliban took control in August.

Pakistani authorities, including the ISI, have long been accused of connecting with senior members of the Taliban and providing them with shelter.

In recent months, the current ISI chief has made two known trips to Kabul to meet Taliban officials. One of them met with the country’s foreign minister this month.

Anjum’s appointment indicates that the army’s chief may facilitate relations with the army that promoted the shuffle of key personnel. Lieutenant General Anjum, previously stationed in Punjab and southwestern Balochistan, will begin a new job on November 20, according to a military statement.

The army had previously stated that as commander of the corps, the leaving ISI chief Faiz Hameed would be stationed in the northwestern city of Peshawar, not far from the Afghan border.
