New Zealand has suspended travelers from India in light of the recent surge in Covid-19 infections. The suspension will come into effect after April 11, according to government officials.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today at a briefing in Auckland.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the suspension would take place from 4 pm on April 11 to April 28.
Travel bans apply to all New Zealand citizens and residents.
When asked about the ban on travelers from India, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her government was “suspended because it is obliged to allow citizens to return to New Zealand.”
The New Zealand government reportedly made the decision after border workers tested positive for Covid-19. News agency RNZ said New Zealand Health Director Ashley Bloomfield said 17 of the 23 newly identified Covid-19 cases in the country had arrived from India.
She did not rule out the extension of the travel ban, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she understood the difficulties posed by this temporary suspension.
“I feel the responsibility and obligation to find ways to reduce the risks travelers are experiencing,” said Jacinda Ardern. She went on to add that the outage would give authorities time to understand the problems of the pre-departure test.
The New Zealand government is not considering a ban on travel to other countries, said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Earlier this week, New Zealand introduced an unquarantine travel bubble with Australia starting April 19.
