New cameo connects Falcon and Winter Soldier to Black Panther franchise

This post contains spoilers for Falcon & Winter Soldier Episode 3.

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) venture, The Falcon & Winter Soldier, delves into the lives of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, played by Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, respectively. In the first two episodes, we saw them navigating their lives after resurrecting five years after the Thanos snap. They also dealt with the loss of Steve Rogers, who went back in time to live with Peggy Carter.

Later, the duo gathered to learn about a new terrorist / revolutionary faction called Flag-Smasher, who was trying to dismantle governments around the world. The duo soon realizes that the members of Flag-Smasher are actually supersoldiers like Steve and Bucky. To see how soldiers like them are growing, they get the help of their unlikely ally, Baron Zemo.

In Episode 3, you can see his enemy, Bucky Frizemo, who disbanded Captain America’s Avengers: Civil War (2016) from prison. With his help, they go to a town called Madridpur and team up with a former SHIELD agent who accidentally gets a bounty in his head and turns to the stolen art dealer Sharon Carter. They found a scientist who recreated Super Serum and learned that an organization called a power broker had asked him to create about 20 Super Soldiers.

Even if the two protagonists are back, the most exciting part of the show came just before the credits. Bucky says he needs to take a walk to Sam and Zemo. He then steps into the alley and meets Ayo, a Dora Milaje soldier played by Florence Kasumba. He says, “I was wondering when you would appear,” and she says, “I’m here for Zemo.”

Who is Ayo? What does that mean for the show?

Ayo is a member of Dora Milaje, the royal security force in Wakanda, led by General Okoye (Danai Gurira). This elite unit is entirely female and is responsible for the safety of Black Panther and other members of the royal family. Ayo was first seen in the Civil War. This is tracked because Falcon and the Winter Soldier are closest to the 2016 movie in terms of continuity and character. Ayo also appeared in Black Panther, fighting the Avengers: Infinity War in an endgame battle.

Why is Ayo looking for Zemo?

In the civil war, Zemo, who wanted to disband the Avengers, first bombed the UN conference in Vienna, killing then-Black Panther and T’Challa’s father, King T’Chaka (John Kani). I killed you. Zemo then blames Bucky. Bucky stabbed himself as an assassin, but is still affected by Hydra’s brainwashing. As a Black Panther, T’Challa seeks revenge from Bucky, but later finds him innocent. At the end of the Civil War, Black Panther even gets a chance to kill Zemo, but hands him over to the police for his crimes. Bucky is then taken to Wakanda, where he is treated by Shri, where Hydra’s connection is healed.

Now, with the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky unleashed Zemo from prison. The Wakandas after the Zemo not only killed their king, but were certainly angry with Bucky for his betrayal. During the years Bucky lived in Wakanda, he was treated as part of the country.

This definitely adds a more complex layer to Sam and Bucky before fighting Flag-Smasher. Defeating Jimo and becoming an enemy of the nation is different from becoming an enemy of the Wakanda nation.

Actor Daniel Brühl, who plays Gimo, also told the publication that Ayo’s existence is not good for Gimo. “Oh yeah. These are very intimidating warriors chasing me. As far as I enjoyed, like Daniel, I look [Ayo actress] Florence [Kasumba] Talk to her again – the only other German-speaking actor on the set – for Zemo, this is a problem. He should be more careful, “he told EW.

What does this mean for the future of the Black Panther franchise?

With the unfortunate end of Chadwick Boseman, Marvel Studios explores the world of Wakanda. According to director Ryan Coogler and Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Black Panther 2 will see other characters become fleshed out superheroes. Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, may also take a Black Panther cloak. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler is also developing a series on Wakanda. The series will reportly be a detailed Game of Thrones-style show in which Wakanda confronts Prince Namor, the supervillain most likely to be a submariner. This was made fun of in the Avengers: Endgame, and Okoye talked about the frequent earthquakes in the country. Endgame writer Christopher Markus also seems to have confirmed this: “Sometimes we sow seeds. Sometimes they grow up.” According to Inverse.

Ayo, who appeared in the Falcon & Winter Soldier, is reminiscent of the splendor of Wakanda. This is an early introduction to what fans can expect from the Black Panther franchise. Not only that, many publications report that the Falcon and the Winter Soldier have another major Wakanda cameo, which could be either Letitia Wright or Shri. The storyline can also be moved to Wakanda for Zemo’s trucks.

On the other hand, it is also a hint that Sebastian Stan may appear in Black Panther 2. Given that Bucky easily knows where to find Wakanda’s technology, many speculate that Bucky works in Wakanda. In a sense, Bucky is more part of the franchise than anyone else.

Finally, since the MCU is basically a chain of interconnected stories, you can easily expect revelations or at least hints about which course Black Panther 2 will take from the show. WandaVision has been found to lead to Doctor Strange 2, and Falcon and Winter Soldier have been found to easily lead to Black Panther 2. Marvel is known for throwing curved balls at the audience, so there is no theory too far for them.

The Falcon & Winter Soldier was directed by Kari Skogland and created by Malcolm Spellman. The show will be streamed every Friday on Disney + Hotstar.
