Nepal demands evacuation of at least 1,500 Nepalese in Afghanistan

The Nepalese government called for the evacuation of an estimated 1,500 Nepalese working as security staff at the Afghanistan embassy and international aid groups on Sunday.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, Sewa Ramsal, told Reuters in Kathmandu that he had “formally submitted a letter requesting evacuation to the embassy.”

Ramsal said the government has also set up a committee to determine the exact number of Nepalese working elsewhere in Kabul and Afghanistan.

“The government will also prepare for their evacuation,” she said.

Nepal has no diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, but thousands of Nepalese men work as security guards in the country’s diplomatic districts.
