Need to buy an iPhone 13?Check your current phone and choose the best upgrade

Now that Apple’s newly announced iPhone 13 lineup can be pre-ordered, you might look at your old phone and wonder if it’s time to change. A review of new phones will start soon, but we hope this guide will help you decide if you need to upgrade and which of the four iPhone 13 models suits your taste.

The WSJ Personal Tech columnist Nicole Nguyen presents a series of simple questions to help you make the right decisions. let’s start.

iPhone 13 Mini ($ 699 or more)

The new Mini is the most affordable, lightest, pocket phone in the 13 lineup and has the same features as the larger iPhone 13. OLED display, 5G connection, A15 Bionic chip, dual rear camera, water resistant. Moreover, it’s like a limited edition. Many analysts expect Apple to discontinue the 5.4-inch mini-size option starting this year due to sluggish sales. The big trade-off for the iPhone 12 Mini was its relatively short battery life, but according to Apple, the new Mini could run 1.5 hours longer than last year’s model. If you’re still afraid of running out of juice, you can always get Apple’s Snap MagSafe Battery Pack. Alternatively, you can get an iPhone 13 with a larger battery.

iPhone 13 ($ 799 and above)

If the price and specs are balanced, this is probably the iPhone for most shoppers. It’s 5G capable, with a spacious 6.1-inch display and a battery that lasts all day long. It has the same A15 Bionic processor as the high-end Pro model. The two main features you’ll miss if you don’t move to Pro are a faster, brighter screen and a third rear camera. The iPhone 13 has two cameras, wide and ultra-wide, and the Pro model has an additional 3x telephoto camera. Are you interested in that telephoto camera? Let’s start with the iPhone 13 Pro.

iPhone 13 Pro ($ 999 or more)

This is a solid choice for those who are willing to pay a premium for a better camera. On the back of this model are wide, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras, offering a full range of 6x optical zoom. Use the Lidar scanner to accelerate shots in autofocus and night portrait mode. Its screen is brighter than non-Pro models and has a high refresh rate for smoother scrolling and game animation. The 13 Pro also comes with a larger storage capacity option (up to 1 terabyte), which has a longer battery life than the iPhone 13 model. If you need a better battery and don’t mind the bulk (or price), consider ProMax.

iPhone 13 Pro Max ($ 1,099 and above)

Of all iPhones, this beast has the largest display (6.7 inches) and battery (supports 25 hours of video streaming compared to 20 hours on the 13 Pro). Like the iPhone 13 Pro, the back of the Max has an A15 Bionic processor and three cameras, wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto. You may have a hard time fitting it into your hand or jeans pocket.

But are they too expensive?

The latest iPhones always have the highest premium. There are three options in particular to save money.

Buy an older model that Apple has just cut. This includes the 5G-enabled iPhone 12 and 12 Mini ($ 599 and above), the plain iPhone 11 ($ 499 and above), and the good old iPhone SE ($ 399 and above). This is the last iPhone with a home button. Colleague Joanna compared the old model with the new lineup here.

Check with your mobile operator for overtime pricing and even discounts. Carriers are already offering promotions on the latest iPhones, usually with some contractual promises with trade-in phones.

Buy Play iPhone model from Apple. Keep in mind that getting an older model will reduce the amount of time you can use your phone. Apple will stop supporting iPhone models about six years after its first sale date.
