Namibia Stops Using Sputnik Jab After South Africa’s HIV Fear

Namibia has stopped using Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine due to concerns from neighboring South Africa, the Ministry of Health said Saturday.

Earlier this week, neighboring South Africa said it would not approve Sputnik V because of concerns that it could increase the risk of HIV transmission in men, according to vaccine developers.

The Namibian Ministry of Health said in a statement that following South Africa’s decision, the use of shots would be stopped immediately until prescriptions were listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization.

“The reason for discontinuing the vaccine is to pay close attention to the fact that men infected with Sputnik V may be at increased risk of becoming infected with HIV,” the ministry said. Said.

Namibia received a donation from Serbia with 30,000 Sputnik doses. So far, less than 120 doses have been administered.

South African health product regulators allowed Sputnik to be used on Monday based on a previous study testing the safety of a modified form of the adenovirus (a type of virus that causes respiratory infections) in jabs, known as Ad5. He said he wouldn’t.

Regulators said two previous studies in South Africa and the Americas found an increased risk of HIV transmission in men associated with the Ad5 viral vaccine.

In both trials, “Ad5 vector vaccine administration was associated with increased HIV susceptibility / acquisition in men,” regulators said last week.

The Russian Gamalaya Center, which developed Sputnik V, states that the allegations about the link between vaccines and HIV are unfounded.

A clinical study of more than 7,000 participants stated that “there was no statistically significant increase in HIV-1 infection among recipients of adenovirus type 5 vector vaccines.”
