Probably more dangerous Type I and II strains found in the capital

New Delhi: Serotyping of samples found to be positive for dengue in Delhi confirmed the presence of two strains of dengue virus (type I and type II). The former causes classic dengue fever and the latter causes shocking hemorrhagic fever.

There are two other types. III heats up without shock and IV heats up without shock or with severe shock.

The presence of Type II strains has raised some concerns. However, officials of the National Vector-Mediated Disease Control Program (NVBDCP) under the Federal Ministry of Health said there was no reason to be vigilant.

“Type I, which causes mild symptoms, predominates. Very few samples have been found to be positive for Type II strains,” officials said.

Dengue fever is a major public health concern in the city with repeated recurrences, especially during the post-monsoon period when mosquito breeding peaks.

NVBDCP officials said the serotype results were inherently preliminary due to the small sample size. “We plan to do more testing to identify trends so that clinicians are notified in advance of circulating strains,” she added. Type I and II strains of the dengue virus have also been found in Uttar Pradesh, where febrile illness has killed several children over the past few weeks.

Dr. Neeraj Nischal, an additional professor of medicine at AIIMS, said that the types of dengue virus that are prevalent are important in preparing for a potential crisis. However, he added, it is more important to focus on preventing the spread of the disease itself by checking the breeding of mosquitoes.

The dengue virus is spread by the freshwater breeder Aedes aegypti. According to data from three municipalities in the city, domestic surrounding containers such as vases, flower pots, bird pots, tin, tires and fountains make up the largest chunk (38%) of mosquito breeding grounds. Household water containers, desert coolers, and overhead tanks are other places where mosquitoes breed.

Mr. Nishal said people need to make sure there is no water stagnation in such places. Authorities need to make the fight against dengue a social movement, among other things, through public awareness, timely identification of high-risk zones, and the use of larval control sprays, he added.

The latest data shared by municipalities on mosquito-borne infections in the capital shows that 158 ​​dengue fever cases were confirmed on September 11. This is more than the number of cases of viral disease reported around the same time last year. At least 68 cases of malaria and 40 cases of chikungunya fever (two other mosquito-borne diseases) have also been identified.
