After producing two successful educational underwater shows, The Mermaid Encounter, in early 2021 and late 2019, VGP Marine Kingdom will announce “Mermaid & The Ghostnet: Taming the Silent Killer of the Ocean.” Educational play to raise awareness about big trash patches around the world filled with big and small microplastics.
As in the previous part, the show will feature professional underwater performers from Europe playing real mermaids and talking about the dangers of mermaid contamination. This part focuses on the damage caused by ghostnets to marine life.
Ghostnets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, discarded or lost at sea or on the beach. They are the main cause of the bigger problem of ghost gear, which refers to all types of fishing gear, including nets, lines, traps, pots and fish collectors that are no longer actively controlled by the fishing industry.
Each year, Ghost Gear is responsible for capturing and killing a significant number of marine animals such as sharks, rays, hard-bone fish, sea turtles, dolphins, whales, crustaceans and seabirds. They can cause further destruction by choking coral reefs, destroying coastlines and damaging boats.
The VGP Marine Kingdom will also host the Ghostnet Recycled Art Exhibition in collaboration with The Tree Foundation, a conservation NGO whose primary mission is to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems and sea turtle populations by developing education.
Starting October 14, the auspicious day of Ayodhya Pooja, the stage will be set up in India’s first underwater tunnel aquarium, the VGP Marine Kingdom, which contains over 3 million liters of salt water. This walkthrough-themed aquarium depicts multiple ecosystems in our environment and is full of over 1000 exotic fish, sharks and rays. Previous shows include Hydroman, Scuba Ganesha and Scuba Santa. This place is also used for many movie shoots.
