Maharashtra: Maharashtra Minister Jitendra Awhad arrested and released on bail for abduction and assault

Maharashtra’s housing minister and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad was arrested Thursday and subsequently released on bail on suspicion of assaulting a social media user at his home.

According to police officials, Awhad appeared at the Vartak Nagar police station in Thane in connection with the incident on Thursday.

His statement was recorded and officials added that he was made in front of a justice of the peace who released the minister with a cash deposit of Rs 10,000 and one guarantor.

Plaintiff Anand Karmuse claimed he was taken to Awhad’s bungalows and beaten in front of the minister in a social media post.

The Bombay High Court ordered Thane police to conduct an appropriate investigation and take the necessary steps after Karmuse demanded that Awhad be accused.

Civil engineer Karmse claimed that some police officers had visited him on the evening of April 5, 2020 and said he had to go to the police station, but instead took him to an Awad bungalow. I went.

In the bungalow, 10 to 15 men were beaten in a morphing photo of the minister shared on Facebook, according to Karmse. He claimed that Awhad was present during the incident. The minister denied the claim.

According to a police statement, the case has been registered with the Vartak Nagar police station under IPC Sections 324 (Assault), 365 (Kidnapping), and 506 (Criminal Intimidation).

BJP leader and former parliamentarian Kirito Somaiya demanded that Awhad be dismissed from the cabinet.

The Maharashtra legislative council’s opposition leader, Pravin Dalekar, claimed that the arrest and subsequent bail appeared to have been “performed by the state government.”

“He was simply taken to the police station and released on bail immediately,” said a BJP leader.
