Iraqi health officials said national laboratories would not have the ability to identify double-mutant coronavirus variants detected in India until a new laboratory was built.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, public health director Riad Abdul-Amir has told the official Iraqi news agency to identify Indian variants until the construction of a new genetic testing laboratory for the virus is completed within two months. He said he couldn’t.

“We still don’t know if the vaccine is effective, but vaccination is still the best option for citizens,” said Abdul-Amir.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Ministry of Health reported 4,902 new Covid-19 cases, increasing the national total to 1,117,627.

In addition, 29 new deaths were reported, the death toll increased to 15,800 and the total recovery increased to 1,011,606.

Since the outbreak in February 2020, 9,707,527 inspections have been carried out nationwide.
