India’s fixed broadband download speeds continued to increase in August 2021 with average speeds reaching 62.45 Mbps, global internet speed tracker Ookla announced. According to the Speedtest Global Index in August 2021, India’s world ranking remained unchanged at 68th, despite recording the highest average speed ever. However, the fixed broadband download speed of 62.45Mbps is well below the global download speed (average) of 110.24Mbps in August 2021. Singapore topped the list with an average fixed broadband download speed of 262.20 Mbps, followed by Hong Kong (254.50 Mbps), Monaco (242.89 Mbps), Switzerland (222.00 Mbps) and Thailand (221.00 Mbps).
In particular, Ookla points out that India’s overall performance in mobile download speed increased slightly from 17.77 Mbps in July 2021 to 17.96 Mbps. However, due to improved performance in countries such as Uzbekistan, Colombia, Belarus and Cote d’Ivoire, the country still dropped four spots from 122 to 126 in the world mobile speed rankings. On Ookla’s mobile internet speed list, the UAE topped the list with an average download speed of 195.52 Mbps, followed by South Korea (192.16 Mbps), Norway (173.54 Mbps), Qatar (169.17 Mbps) and China (163.45 Mbps).
India’s neighbors such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are not far from the mobile download speed list. Pakistan outperformed India on the mobile internet list by registering an average download speed (rank 120) of 19.79 Mbps in August 2021. Sri Lanka’s mobile download speed is 16.02 Mbps, just four spots below India. Like Pakistan, its fixed broadband speed is well below 26.05 Mbps. Nepal’s average mobile download speed and fixed broadband download speed are 20.90Mbps and 30.49Mbps, respectively, showing the same trends as Pakistan and Sri Lanka. China’s fixed broadband download speed is 193.15 Mbps, far ahead of its southern neighbors.
Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index compares Speedtest data around the world on a monthly basis. Global index data comes from hundreds of millions of tests that real people do each month using Speedtest to test Internet performance.
