Indian festival smartphone shipments in the first quarter fall into supply constraints

New Delhi: According to a report by market research firm Canalys, smartphone shipments in India fell 5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2021. Shipments fell from about 50 million units sold in the same quarter last year to 47.5 million units in the third quarter. This decline was due to supply constraints that made it difficult for sellers to ship low-end models to the country.

That said, shipments in India are still increasing by 47% in a row. Shipments from April to June were hit by a catastrophic second wave of domestic coronavirus infections, leading to a second slowdown in sales over the years. Sanyaam Chaurasia, an analyst at Canalys, said supply constraints are expected to continue into the fourth quarter of this year.

“But smartphone brands strive to minimize the impact on Indian customers and prioritize online channels when possible to provide margin buffers that can reduce price turmoil,” Chaurasia said. He added. Oppo and Vivo also contributed to the fall of the quarter.

He said the top five companies in the market remain the same, although all shipments and market share have declined this year. China’s Xiaomi took the top spot with 11.2 million units and 24% market share, up from 13.1 million units shipped and 26.1% market share in the year-ago quarter.

Samsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo each won four spots: South Korean smartphone makers recorded shipments of 9.1 million units, and the other three companies recorded shipments of 8.1 million units, 7.5 million units, and 6.2 million units, respectively. Interestingly, as the top five sellers saw a decline in market share, other sellers in the market grew, recording a market share of 11% compared to 5% last year.

Another Canalys analyst, Jash Shah, said US smartphone giant Apple used promotional deals to boost sales of the iPhone 12 model in India prior to the launch of the iPhone 13 in September. .. The company didn’t elaborate on Apple’s share of the Indian market.
