Imola, Italy: Max Verstappen set the fastest time in the final practice of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix to increase his chances of taking pole position later on Saturday.
The Red Bull driver was nearly 0.5 seconds faster than the other packs. He was 0.456 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and .557 away from world champion Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
Mercedes led two practice sessions on Friday, and Barteribotta was the fastest in both. It was right in front of Hamilton as Red Bull endured a tough start on the weekend.
Verstappen’s second practice continued just 10 minutes after the drive shaft problem.
Bottas was eighth fastest on Saturday, nearly a second behind Verstappen.
The Emilia Romagna GP is the second race of the F1 season. Hamilton won the opening round in Bahrain last month, just before Verstappen, after a thrilling duel.
The race was effectively decided when Verstappen overtook Hamilton, but it was too wide on the turn to push the limits of the track. He was told by his team to return to Hamilton.
Track limits can also cause problems with Imola as some drivers have deleted the time after running wide on the turn nine.
Saturday’s practice was temporarily red-flagged after Nicholas Latifi lost control at Billneuve’s Chikane and slipped through the gravel into the barrier.
