Slovakia scored three key points in the tournament with a sweet victory over the very fancy Polish team in the Group E opening game at Euro 2020 in St. Petersburg on Monday.

Slovakia continued to be undefeated against Poland and started the campaign with an overwhelming victory, thanks to Wojciech Szczesny’s own goal and Milan Skriniar’s second half goal.

In the 18th minute Slovakia took the lead with Robert Mack’s excellent run, with Polish goalkeeper Szczesny scoring an own goal. Szczesny was the first goalkeeper to recognize the first own goal in Euro history and was also the fastest own goal in the European Championships.

Poland counterattacked shortly after the break as Karol Linetty launched an attack in the 46th minute. Midfielder Gujegosh Krihowiak was sent off 62 minutes after picking up two yellow cards and was the first player to receive a red card in this edition.

Milan Skriniar turned out unlikely to be the hero of the match as he set up a net to sign a contract with Slovakia in the 69th minute. He was only his third goal in 41 international appearances.

Slovakia has won nine games against Poland for the fifth time and two consecutive victories since 2013.
