Training for 22 tourist guides from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will take place from 22nd to 26th November 2021 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. – “The International Aspects of the European Year of Cultural Heritage” conducted by UNESCO with the financial support of the European Union.

Training in Samarkand is the culmination of the WFTGA Hands-on-Tourist Guide (HOT) Training for Silk Road Heritage Guides, launched online in partnership with the World Tourism Guide Association (WFTGA) in August 2020.

The purpose of this course is to allow tourist guides to interpret the cultural and natural heritage along the Silk Road.

Tourist guides are ambassadors for their countries and cities / destinations and are often the only local contact for visitors during their stay abroad. The guide interprets the site and conveys valuable knowledge, creating memories for visitors, leaving a lifelong impression, and influencing the behavior and destination opinions of travelers. The guide is in a unique position to provide genuine local perspectives and experiences on the country and culture, and to promote cultural understanding and peace.

Tourist guides along the Silk Road play an important role in keeping the region’s history and incredible culture alive. Guides from the Silk Road countries need to understand the overall history and culture of the Silk Road and be able to conduct guided tours in a professional way in line with international standards in order to fulfill its role. ..

After completing the course, the guide plans to actively assist visitors and tourists in understanding the diverse historical and cultural values of the Silk Road. As part of the course, the Silk Road Guide Training Handbook is published in English and Russian. The manual can be downloaded from https: //unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000374500.
