EC Notice to Svendu Adikari for Joint Overtones of His Speech

On Thursday, the Election Commission notified Svendu Adikari, a BJP candidate from Nandiglam, West Bengal, of alleged community overtones in his speech last month. He was asked to respond to the notification within 24 hours.

According to the notice, the polling committee received a complaint from Kavita Krishnan of the CPI-ML Central Committee, and Adhikari made a “hate speech” in Nandigram during a speech at a public meeting on March 29.

The EC mentions two provisions of the Model Code of Conduct, stating that criticisms of other parties, if made, are limited to their policies and programs, past records and work. Distortion should be avoided.

  • Another provision shall be that there is no appeal against caste or community sentiment to secure a vote. According to the notice, the EC was found to be in breach of certain provisions of the model code. Adhikari will face Mamata Banerjee, Prime Minister and leader of the Trinamool Congress in Nandygram.
