Experts unanimously show that early diagnosis is essential to treat breast cancer

Cancer has been a threat to society since ancient times, and people all over the world are suffering from the effects of cancer. According to a survey conducted by the National Cancer Registry Program, the estimated number of cancer patients in India in 2020 was 1,392,179. Of these, 57% of cases diagnosed in the locally advanced stage were breast cancer.

On this Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the HEAL Foundation held a Breast Cancer Awareness Dialogue in collaboration with HEAL Health to discuss that breast cancer can be cured if diagnosed early. This was 22NS HEAL Episode-Thy Samvaad Series.

During the dialogue, Dr. P Raghu Ram, Surgeon-KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Breast Disease Center Director and Consultant, said: However, when a patient sees a doctor, the patient must be in a place called a “triple assessment” before the diagnosis can be made. This includes history acquisition and patient testing (this is the first factor). The second component is a combination of mammogram (x-ray of the breast) and ultrasound scan, and the third component is an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy. When this triple assessment is done, the cancer first affects the body as well as the mind, so counseling calms the patient. “

Dr. Aloke Mullick, Group CEO of OMNI Hospitals, said: “”Breast cancer cases are usually diagnosed at an advanced stage in India, which may be difficult to cure. Therefore, early diagnosis is essential because breast cancer opens the way to cure the disease. However, there is a lack of awareness of the mass illness that essentially needs to be taught. Breast cancer cases appear to be increasing across the region, which can be prevented by increasing awareness of early diagnosis. “

Dr. Senthil Rajappa, a medical oncology scholar at the Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Institute, detailed the key demographics and incidence associated with breast cancer epidemics, stating: Per 100,000 people a year. Comparing this with Western European countries, such as North America, the incidence of breast cancer is 130 per 100,000 per year. Geographically, for unknown reasons, the Hyderabad Cancer Registry reveals that 48 out of 100,000 people in Hyderabad have the highest geographical proportion in the country. Breast cancer is a lifestyle-related disease, and population-based cancer registries are not as robust as in Western countries, so the number reported is low. “

Dr. T Subramanyeshwar Rao, a surgical oncology scholar at the Basavatakaram Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute, said:, “The list of approved surgeries continues to change, as in the West. Previously, only limited breast-conserving surgery was performed for a variety of reasons. But science had to catch up. When the surgeon and patient were convinced, the media-educated community also played a major role. He also noted that patients whose families survived breast cancer were more likely to undergo a mastectomy. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose and treat it early. “
