Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that dozens of staff have been infected with the coronavirus and will continue to self-quarantine due to the outbreak.

The Kremlin announced earlier this week that Putin would be self-quarantined after being infected by someone in his inner circle, despite being negative for the virus and being completely vaccinated against Russia’s Sputnik V.

But Putin said Thursday that the infection was widespread.

“Cases of coronavirus have been identified in my immediate environment. This is not one, not two, but dozens. Now we have to observe the self-isolation regime for a few days. “No,” he said in a video link to the Russian-led Group Security Treaty Summit.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the infection was “mainly the work and activities of the head of state, those who participated in ensuring his safety.” Neither case was serious, he said.

Russia was the first country to introduce the coronavirus vaccine, but less than 30 percent of the country is fully vaccinated.

The National Coronavirus Response Headquarters states that approximately 7.2 million cases have been recorded and 195,835 people have died in 145 million countries.
