Doctor strikes start today and find out what they are protesting

Residents across India have called for a national strike from November 27th today. They have decided to withdraw from the Patient Department (OPD) service. “The authorities will be responsible for the unfortunate situation affecting medical services,” said the Federation of Indian Medical Associations, which called for a strike on November 27.

Doctors are protesting NEETPG’s counseling and delays in hospitalization. NEET PG is a graduate-level exam in which existing physicians participate to pursue graduate-level education. Residents who appear on the exam are waiting for admission counseling. Counseling was originally scheduled to begin on October 25, but has been put on hold by a Supreme Court order.

The Supreme Court is hearing the plea for the assignment of EWS in admission to the Medical Association. The federal government has reserved 10 percent of the medical association’s seats for students in the economically vulnerable section (EWS) category. However, the SC has questioned the government’s 8 rupee limit for determining EWS candidates.

Now, the Under Secretary of Justice of India, Tushar Mehta, has told the Supreme Court that the government will set up a committee and make new decisions within four weeks. Until then, counseling will be delayed. Residents can expect counseling to be postponed until January.

If the limit changes, it means that students are more or less eligible to take advantage of the newly introduced quotas. The Modi government has introduced a 10 percent appointment to the Medical Association for students who belong to the economically vulnerable section of society. The counseling process and subsequent admission to the medical college will remain closed until a decision is made on this issue.

Doctors claim that they are “already overloaded and exhausted,” and that delays in the already delayed counseling process are affecting them.
