The UNESCO Southern Africa Regional Office (ROSA) will be responsible for resilience under the sub-theme 3 “Building Africa’s Resilience to Climate Change and Related Disasters” during the 8th Africa Water Week on November 25, 2021. Promote a session. Focus on providing hands-on examples of how to build resilience in southern Africa using innovative climate services, applied research, and open source technologies.
The effects of climate change have been observed throughout the Southern African region, where water-related hazards cause massive floods, landslides, severe droughts, significant impacts on natural resources and direct human security. It poses a threat. Climate change is driven by global processes, but solutions to offset the negative effects of climate risk are particularly dependent on local conditions. In this regard, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (BR) has the potential to become a global observatory for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The Be-Resilient Initiative focuses on strengthening BR and its communities to address climate change challenges and associated water-related hazards. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will involve a series of established and proposed BRs in the region to pilot effective pathways for adaptation to climate change.
This session aims to present innovative tools and climate services for disaster risk mitigation and their successful implementation in Southern Africa, and to discuss the potential for further replication and expansion. In particular, solutions are presented that consider using the Internet of Things approach for flood and drought monitoring and early warning, flood and drought risk assessment, and improved water monitoring. This session will also introduce new approaches to climate change adaptation piloted in five biosphere reserves in southern Africa.
