Two years ago this week, two crashes on a plane killed a total of 346 people and banned passengers from flying after urging close surveillance of the plane and the company. However, at the end of last year, the Federal Aviation Administration lifted the ban on planes after the necessary changes were made, allowing Max to start carrying passengers again.
According to Boeing, most of the world’s 190 aviation authorities have approved Max to fly again, with 14 airlines using the plane on more than 9,000 flights.
Airplane sales have also recovered. Boeing said on Tuesday that it had received orders for 82 new planes in February. About half of them are for Max, including bulk orders from United Airlines. In addition, orders for 51 aircraft were canceled, bringing the company’s backlog to 4,041 aircraft.
It was the first month of Boeing’s strong sales since November 2019, but the difficulties are not over yet.
The coronavirus pandemic devastated the travel sector and urged airlines to cancel orders and rethink plans to expand or renew their fleet. Boeing has also stopped delivering its twin-isle 787 due to quality concerns.
And the company is facing a lawsuit over Max from shareholders and the families of the murdered people who allegedly mismanaged their response to the crisis.
The first Max crash occurred in Indonesia in October 2018. The second occurred in Ethiopia two years ago this Wednesday. To mark that tough milestone, families of those who died in the crash are planning to host a rally outside the FAA in Washington, some meeting Secretary of Transportation Pete Butigeg and Max’s safety.
