The new BMW XM will be the first stand-alone vehicle from a performance brand since the legendary M1. Thus, the new performance SUV will be announced in the same year that the BMW M1 celebrates its 50th anniversary. The company also states that with the new XM, BMW will make the design of the X model very progressive and unique, showing “a whole new form of luxury and interior space”. The power source of the new BMW Concept XM is a newly developed M hybrid drive system that combines a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to achieve a maximum output of approximately 738 bhp (550 kW) and a peak torque of 1,000 Nm. It will be the first electric vehicle in the high performance segment of the BMW M brand.

Visually, the new Concept XM comes with what BMW calls the new progressive front-end design. This includes a large kidney grill, each in the shape of an octagon. It features horizontal slats with the XM logo. The SUV also features a highly aggressive looking bumper with sharp, muscular lines that blend seamlessly with the diffuser. The small twin LED headlights have a futuristic look, but the square wheel arches have cladding and high shoulder lines, giving the SUV a robust stance. Above the left front wheel is a charging port for the plug-in hybrid system. The profile shows a more complex character line, with black-filled columns and wide, shiny black lines or “black belts” separating the two exterior colors.

The taillights have a futuristic look designed in the form of slim L-shaped LED strips, and the reflector acts like an extension.

The rear section also has a unique design, with the rear windshield inserted almost seamlessly into the rear end. Below each of the two cant rails is the laser-etched BMW logo. This is a stylistic reference to the BMW M1. The taillight is designed in the form of a slim L-shaped LED strip, giving it a futuristic look with the reflector acting like an extension.
