Al Jazeera calls Israeli missile attack on Gaza office an attempt to silence the media

Al Jazeera said it would not be silent after the Israeli air strike on Gaza destroyed the building containing the Qatar-based broadcaster and the Associated Press of the United States. “It is clear that those in this war not only want to spread destruction and death in Gaza, but also to silence the media that witnesses, documents and reports on the truth of what is happening in Gaza.” Said Waleed Al Omari. , Jerusalem bureau chief in Al Jazeera.

“But this is not possible,” he said in a broadcast shortly after the 13-story Jara Tower in Gaza was wiped out.

“This is one of a series of crimes committed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.”

Al Jazeera broadcast a video showing that the building fell to the ground after the Israeli airstrike, sending out a huge mushroom cloud of dust and debris.

Jara Tower owner Jawad Medi said Israeli intelligence agents warned that there was only one hour to ensure the evacuation of the building.

Gaza’s Al Jazeera correspondent, Safwat al-Karlaut, tweeted his despair of destruction.

“I’ve been working here for 11 years. I’ve covered many events from this building … now everything disappeared in 2 seconds,” he said.

Israel claimed that “fighters attacked skyscrapers containing military assets belonging to the military intelligence of the Hamas terrorist organization.”

“The building also hosted a private media office hidden behind and used by the Hamas terrorist group as a human shield,” he said.

Airstrikes and shelling in Israel’s Gaza since Monday have killed 139 people, including 39 children, and injured another 1,000, according to coastal health officials.
